Complex designs made simple

Finnish Intelligent Module Apartments, FIMATEC is a Finnish company that specialises in machine and device design.

The company is spearheading the development of the 3D printing method for buildings and building elements, targeting both the Finnish and international markets. The company, based in Finland’s eastern city of Imatra, has developed the RoboCatt 3D printing unit, which can be applied for construction purposes in concrete element factories or at construction sites. “This involves exporting information created from computer-generated models to the concrete mixer, which then creates solid objects by layering thin slices of material including plastic, metal or ceramic in a back-and-forth movement along the specified length to create a wall,” explains Edwin Mugendi, the country representative of FIMATEC. “This technology is about to change the construction landscape in the world forever. Using this technology, architectural forms can be designed more freely, especially for curved elements. The cost of producing walls is also significantly reduced,” says Mr Mugendi.
