A 7.9 km long tunnel, named Norðfjarðargöng, opened between the towns of Neskaupstaður and Eskifjörður in East Iceland, replacing a difficult mountain road across the Oddskarð pass and the one-way Oddsskardsgöng tunnel. The longest construction of its kind in Iceland, the tunnel was excavated by Czech company Metrostav in cooperation with Iceland’s Sudurverk company. According to Icelandic TV station Ríkisútvarpid, the total costs of the construction and accompanying infrastructure reached ISK 14.3 billion. The grand opening of Norðfjarðargöng was celebrated by Icelandic Minister of Transport Jón Gunnarsson, Czech Ambassador to Norway and Iceland Jaroslav Knot and a Metrostav representative.
