Copenhagen politicians want to limit the number of days apartments can be sublet on Airbnb

“We must prevent platforms like Airbnb from creating a market in which homes are used for pure speculation and economic gain, thereby being removed from Copenhageners and an already-stressed housing market,” Copenhagen’s mayor Frank Jensen said. Regulation would also serve the purpose of limiting tax evasion. Though no specific limit is yet proposed for Copenhagen it could very well be fewer days. Such a system is, however, difficult to enforce without the cooperation of Airbnb. Though the company is not likely keen on making enemies of local politicians, the question remains if a cap would actually fix the problem, or whether it would just break Airbnb’s current monopoly within its niche.
