Denmark targets ban on all fluorinated chemicals in FCMs
The compounds can be highly persistent and some accumulate in animals and humans, according to a release from the Ministry of Environment and Food. The plan follows the European Food Safety Authority's (Efsa) recent risk assessment on perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). Denmark can become the first country in the world to ban the entire group of organic fluorinated compounds in cardboard and paper food contact materials (FCMs). The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration has long advised against using organic fluorinated compounds in FCMs, and parts of retail have phased out the substances voluntarily.
