(ČIA) VŠCHT Praha in cooperation with Pražské vodovody a kanalizace has developed a method for determining the true extent of the COVID-19 epidemic based on the determination of the content virus RNA in wastewater. According to VŠCHT, the method does not depend on the willingness of infected people to undergo testing, it obtains data in advance, it is cheaper, it can detect outbreaks and track the spread of mutations. But to enforce the method, the help of the state, laboratories, epidemiologists and possibly companies is needed. Pilot monitoring has been ongoing since July 2020 in 14 locations in the Prague sewer network. The Czech Republic has a long-term high proportion of positive tests, the real scale of the pandemic in society is not known and is only estimated.
